From the mouth of babes, or in my case, an 80-year-old black woman in an eight-year-old body, “Mika, do you want to be a mom?” We were sitting at her parents’ kitchen table on Christmas Day, dressing her new doll. When the question slid from her mouth into my ears, I quickly answered yes! She replied back, “I need a cousin from you, and maybe you should consider adoption.” I blinked several times to still my mind; my mother stopped mid-sentence with the sidebar conversation she was having with my sister-in-love. “K, what exactly do you know about adoption,” I asked while trying to sound relaxed. My sweet niece replied, “ I saw it onYouTube, and you would be a fabulous mom; plus, I need a cousin from you. “SO GET ME A COUSIN!”
Wait before you say you are in the process of adopting a child based on a child’s comment (stop with the Judgement). So mind your business, drink your water, and continue reading as I embark upon my Journey to Motherhood.
