My Story - From a Christmas question to forever family

From a Christmas question to forever family.

Mika - License to Be a Mom

Hey, I’m Mika.

Foster-to-adopt mama and creator of License to Be a Mom. Here’s how I got here.

The Question That Changed Everything

It was Christmas 2021. I was at my family’s house, surrounded by kids running around everywhere. My niece, about to turn 8, climbed up next to me.

We were dressing her new doll when she looked me in my eyes and asked:

“Mika, do you want to be a mom?”

I didn’t know what to say. But that night, God confirmed it. Twice. I knew what I was supposed to do.

The Info Session Where Nobody Looked Like Me

In January 2022, I signed up for a foster care info session. It was on Zoom.

And not one person on that screen looked like me.

I signed up anyway.

Because I realized something important: I didn’t need permission from society. I didn’t need approval from people who doubted me. I needed the actual paperwork that said I was ready.

I needed a license to be a mom.

They Just Said Alright

I drove to my parents’ house with my whole defense prepared. I had answers ready for every pushback I thought was coming.

I sat them down. Told them I was going to foster to adopt. By myself. As a single woman. No husband. Just me.

I braced myself.

And you know what they did? They smiled. Looked at each other. And said, “Alright.”

No lecture. No “are you sure?” No list of reasons why I couldn’t. Just… alright.

Your village might surprise you too.

The Night I Almost Quit

I almost closed my home. The night before Baby Who Who came through my door, I almost gave up.

I was tired. Tired of waiting. Tired of wondering if this was even supposed to happen for me.

That night, I prayed for a baby that wasn’t even mine yet. I asked God if I should just let it go.

The next morning? The phone rang. They had a placement. A little girl who needed a home.

Don’t close your home. Don’t close your heart. Don’t give up the night before everything you prayed for walks through your door.

A Warm Spring Day

On March 14th, I got the call about a little girl who needed a home.

But they sent her to another family.

Two days later, my phone rang again. She needed a new placement. On March 16th, Baby Who Who came through my door. A warm spring day.

I remember asking the caseworker, “How long do you think she’ll stay?” She didn’t have an answer. Nobody ever does in foster care.

But then something happened that I will never forget for as long as I live.

I picked her up for the first time. And she took the deepest sigh. Like her whole little body just… exhaled. Like she was saying, “I’m finally home.”

The family before said she cried all night. Every night.

Not in my home. Not one time.

I checked on her every 30 minutes because of her injuries. Every time, still peaceful. Still resting.

She couldn’t talk. She couldn’t walk. But that little body knew something the paperwork didn’t say yet.

She was already home. She was already mine. And I was already hers.

Why I Built This

When I started my foster care journey, I couldn’t find anyone who looked like me. Not on the info session. Not in the Facebook groups. Not on Instagram.

Single Black women fostering to adopt? We exist. But nobody was talking about it.

So I built the resource I wish I had.

This page is for every woman who’s been told she can’t. Every woman who’s wondered if she’s “allowed.” Every woman who’s felt alone on this journey.

Sis, you ARE enough. And I’ll show you exactly how I did it.
